The final WTA 1000 event of the season, the Wuhan Open, commenced in China with a players’ party on Sunday, October 5. Romania is represented at the tournament by Jaqueline Cristian (27, WTA No. 48) and Sorana Cîrstea (35, WTA No. 58).
The pre-tournament gala was attended by numerous stars of the sport. Cîrstea, who will face Jelena Ostapenko in the first round, was seen with Donna Vekic and Belinda Bencic. Other notable attendees captured in official photos included Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek, rising star Mirra Andreeva, Britain’s Emma Raducanu, and Elena Rybakina.
As main draw action began on Monday, October 6, players immediately faced challenging conditions. Echoing recent complaints from the men’s tournament in Shanghai, high heat and humidity in Wuhan led to interruptions and delays in several matches.
In the opening day’s results, Laura Siegemund advanced after Dayana Yastremska retired from their match. Marie Bouzkova secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Camila Osorio, Hailey Baptiste defeated Ashlyn Krueger 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, and doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova won her singles match against Diana Shnaider 6-4, 6-4.
The Romanian players are scheduled to begin their campaigns on Tuesday, October 7.
