Appointment of Carlos Manuel Joaquín González advances as ambassador

The Second Commission of the Permanent Commission of the Congress of the Union approved the decree ratifying the appointment of Carlos Manuel Joaquín González as extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Mexico in Canada, which will be submitted today for discussion and vote by the full chamber.

The appointment of the former governor of Quintana Roo, made by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was endorsed by 11 votes in favor and 5 against.

During his appearance before federal senators and deputies, the former state president, who came to the position postulated by the PAN and PRD after defecting from the PRI, offered to deepen the commercial relationship within the framework of the treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC). .

And he assured that he considers that he has “experience to achieve better conditions for migrants.”

Unlike the PRI legislators, PRI senator Beatriz Paredes voted in favor of the ratification of her former party member who was Undersecretary of Tourism during the six-year term of former President Enrique Peña Nieto.

“I have confidence in your professionalism, in the knowledge you have of the tourism sector and other sectors, and I am certain that if your appointment is ratified, you will have a patriotic, responsible and honorable performance,” said the Tlaxcalan woman.

The senator of Morena Lucía Meza criticized the attitude of the opposition legislators to politicize the discussion on the appointment of Carlos Joaquín, when it is the power of the federal Executive to appoint the ambassadors.

In her turn, PAN deputy Mariana Gómez del Campo criticized the appointment of ambassadors who, in her opinion, do not meet the diplomatic profile required to hold office.
