Argentina will nominate Cecilia Todesca for the presidency of the IDB

The economist and civil servant Cecilia Todesca was designated by the Argentine Government as a candidate for the presidency of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), a position that will compete with applicants from Mexico and Brazil, an official source told Reuters on Friday.

Todesca, 51 years old and current Secretary of International Economic Relations, is Argentina’s candidate for the presidency of the largest lender in the region, after the dismissal of Mauricio Claver Carone after an investigation into an intimate relationship with a subordinate.

The announcement was broadcast in Paris, where the official is part of the entourage that accompanies the president Alberto Fernandez on an official tour of France to look for investment and export possibilities, but it was confirmed to Reuters by an official source, who clarified that the Government will formally communicate it this Friday afternoon.

Todesca, an economist from the University of Buenos Aires and a Master’s in Public Administration from Columbia University in New York, who held the Argentine chair before the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the presidency of the former president Nestor Kirchnerwill compete with the Mexican Gerardo Esquivel and with the Brazilian candidate Ilan Goldfjn.

The President of the IDB is elected by the Board of Governors to serve for a period of five years, according to the bank’s website.

To be elected president of the IDB, the candidate must have the support of a number of member countries of the bank that give him an absolute majority of the voting power, as well as an absolute majority of the number of member countries of the Americas.

The IDB has 26 borrowing member countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, in addition to Canada and the United States.
