Atletico Mineiro, the Brazilian football champion, announced yesterday, Thursday, its contract with Argentine Antonio Mohamed to coach the team for the 2022 season.
Mohamed took over from coach Coca, who resigned last month after leading Atlético Mineiro to the greatest season in its history by winning the first domestic league title since 1971, the state title and the Brazilian Cup.
Mohamed, who was close to coaching Monterrey, Mexico, where he spent two previous periods, trained in Spain and Argentina.
Rodrigo Caetano, Atlético’s director of football, said that Mohamed had signed a contract with the Belo Horizonte club, until December 2022, and would start his work next Monday.
He added, “Many coaches have offered us from several different countries, but his way of playing high pressure and the desire to control the match prompted us to choose him. We hope that he will succeed in repeating his good work here at Atletico.”
Mohamed, the owner of the leading figure, was awarded the best coach in the Mexican league in 2015 and 2016.
He will coach a squad that includes many talents, including Brazilian international players and others from Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.
