ASU football’s Cam Skattebo, Sam Leavitt celebrate Big 12 title win
Cam Skattebo and Sam Leavitt celebrate during halftime of the AIA Open Division championship after beating Iowa State to win the Big 12 championship.
A successful season means individual accolades and Arizona State Offensive Coordinator Marcus Arroyo has made an elite list.
Arroyo is one of five finalists for the Broyles Award, which honors the nation’s top assistant coach. The others are Bryant Haines, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Indiana; Al Golden, defensive coordinator at Notre Dame; Tim Banks, defensive coordinator at Tennessee; and Pete Kwiatkowski, defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Texas.
Arroyo, 44, is in his first season in Tempe and has been instrumental in the development of freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt.
ASU averaged just 17.7 points and 321 yards per game last season and improved in his first year calling the offense to 33 points and 423.2 yards per game.
The selection committee is made up of former head coaches and broadcasters, with a committee representing the Football Writers Association of America narrowing the list of 15 semifinalists to five finalists. A winner will be named on Feb. 13. The 2023 winner was Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker. Previous winners are not eligible to be nominated for the Broyles Award until the completion of three seasons.
The Sun Devils (11-2) are preparing for a Jan. 1 showdown against either Texas or Clemson in the Peach Bowl as part of the College Football Playoff. ASU is coming off back-to-back 3-9 seasons with the current surge also resulting in head coach Kenny Dillingham being named Big 12 Coach of the Year and a finalist for 2024 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year honor.
