Colonel Suleiman Dembele, the military spokesman in Mali, said that armed men killed at least 6 soldiers and wounded 18 others in two coordinated attacks in the center of the country on Sunday morning.
He added that the two attacks took place around 3:00 GMT in the villages of Pulkisi and Mondoro in Mopti region, which led to a clash between the militants and the army, noting that about 30 of the attackers were killed.
Extremist groups with links to al-Qaeda and ISIS have been concentrated for years in central and northern Mali regions. These groups control vast areas of remote desert and usually launch attacks on the army and civilians.
The militants used those areas as a springboard to launch attacks across neighboring Niger and Burkina Faso, destabilizing the entire region and deploying thousands of international troops there.
Four UN peacekeepers were killed and five wounded in central Mali this month after a convoy was hit by an explosive device and gunfire.
