Arrests Made After Cincinnati Brawl Leaves Multiple People Injured

Viral videos of a large-scale brawl in downtown Cincinnati have drawn national attention, prompting city and state officials to coordinate a response to address crime and public safety concerns.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has confirmed that the Ohio State Highway Patrol will provide assistance to the Cincinnati Police Department. The support will include traffic enforcement to free up local officers for other duties, a state helicopter for criminal searches and vehicle pursuit mitigation, and a “real data analysis” to identify crime hotspots.

Mayor Aftab Pureval, who cut a family vacation short to return to the city, accepted the governor’s offer of assistance. “Combatting violence is our most urgent challenge, and this coordination and support from the State of Ohio will assist our local law enforcement in ensuring the safety of all our residents,” Pureval said. He is expected to announce a comprehensive plan to address crime and public safety on August 1.

The incident has also generated political controversy. Cincinnati Councilwoman Victoria Parks sparked a backlash with a social media post about the fight, commenting, “They begged for that beat down!” Parks later defended her statement by invoking freedom of speech. Fellow council members publicly condemned her remarks. Councilwoman Meeka Owens stated, “Making comments that inflame a violent incident is never acceptable,” while Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney said the council condemns the violent actions of both the instigators and those who retaliated.

In a related development, Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy announced he will host a town hall in Cincinnati on August 4 with former Vice Mayor Chris Smitherman to discuss the incident.

Police have made several arrests in connection with the July 26 brawl. Montianez Merriweather, 34, Jermaine Matthews, 39, and Dekyra Vernon, 24, face charges including felonious assault and aggravated riot. At a court hearing, Merriweather’s bond was set at $500,000, Matthews’ at $100,000, and Vernon’s at $200,000. Police have identified two other suspects who are not yet in custody.

According to police, video footage shows Merriweather coordinating with Matthews before striking a victim from behind. The two men then allegedly chased the victim and continued to punch and kick him on the ground. A detective stated that Vernon, who was a bystander, “interjected herself into a brawl” by approaching and punching a woman who was trying to protect someone else.

Court documents list four individuals as victims. A Cincinnati police spokesperson confirmed that two victims were treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich has stated she will prosecute the attackers “to the fullest extent of the law.” While U.S. Senator Bernie Moreno has said the FBI is investigating the incident, an official federal probe has not been confirmed.
