Assembly and export of cars start 2023 on the right foot

The total vehicle production light in Mexico and shipments abroad began 2023 with growth. During January, production grew 2.4% and exports advanced 9.9% year-on-year.

During this first month of the year, automotive companies assembled a total of 280,315 cars and 238,135 units were sent abroad, according to the AMIA report (Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry) published by the Inegi.

These advances were achieved despite the loss of dynamism in seven of the 13 companies that report their numbers.

Honda topped the list with a 34.4% contraction in total cars assembled during January. BMW Group, Mercedes Benz, Ford Motor, General Motors and Audi also registered significant falls in their production levels.

For his part, Stellar -which merges the Chrysler and FIAT brands- achieved a growth of 70.8%, the most pronounced of all. Mazda, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen and JAC also started the year with progress.

Sales in the domestic market also advance

These results reflected a greater dynamism not only in terms of production and exports, sales in the domestic market also advanced.

The total number of new cars sold in January 2023 amounted to 94,414, a significant growth of 20.1% compared to the same month of the previous year.

At the start of 2023, the Japanese Nissan returned to position itself as the sales leader in the Mexican market, leaving the US General Motors in second place.

Although the Automotive industry has faced significant obstacles in its post-pandemic recovery, the turbulence in the production chains and the supply of inputs are expected to normalize during 2023.
