150 people were missing and 10 bodies were recovered after flash floods caused by the collapse of a huge glacier in the Shamuli region of Uttarakhand province in India, according to an indefinite toll, while relief teams evacuated thousands of people.
Indian sources believe that the missing, who are feared to have died by drowning, are for the most part workers who were carrying out an electric power project in the region when the avalanche caused the rise of the Daulegana River and the strength of its water current to sweep all that falls on its path.
And local security sources confirmed that the water of the river flooded several homes located on the banks, and bodies of the shipwrecked were seen floating on the water. The electric power company said that contact with its workers, who were in the area, was not yet possible, and the power plant project suffered damage, adding to the Indian media.
The authorities, including the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, are on alert to confront the repercussions of this disaster, and have dispatched hundreds of emergency workers for relief and tracing the missing, reinforced with the necessary equipment and machinery, in addition to teams of armed forces and helicopters.
