At least 60 people have died when a ferry carrying more than 700 passengers sank in the Congo River overnight, said Humanitarian Affairs Minister Steve Mbekai of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
He said in a tweet on “Twitter” that 300 survivors were found near the scene of the accident in the western region of Mai-Ndombe, but 420 others are still missing.
He added, “We sympathize with the families of the victims and demand that sanctions be imposed on all officials in the transport sector.”
Ship accidents are common in the Congo, which has few paved roads through its forested interior, and these ships are often overcrowded with passengers, as the Congo River and its branches are the only means of travel for most people over long distances.
