Atlético de Madrid are in advanced negotiations to sign Argentine international Thiago Almada, with sources confirming to ESPN that the player has already agreed to the move.
Almada is set to join the Madrid-based club as a replacement for Ángel Correa, who recently completed a transfer to Tigres. The deal is being finalized with Eagle Football Holdings, the ownership group of both Lyon and Botafogo, for a fee estimated to be between €15 million and €20 million.
A versatile attacking player, the 24-year-old can operate both on the wings and in a central role. Atlético’s management reportedly values his combination of current ability and significant future potential, and the club’s scouts have been impressed by his performances.
Despite his youth, Almada has built a notable career, starting at Velez Sarsfield before moving to Atlanta United in MLS and then playing for Botafogo and Lyon. His international experience, including being a member of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, is seen as a significant asset.
Almada’s potential arrival coincides with the possible departure of midfielder Rodrigo de Paul. Both players, along with Correa, are represented by agent Agustín Jiménez. Sources indicate that De Paul has agreed to join Inter Miami CF, with the transfer now contingent on the clubs finalizing a fee. Following unsuccessful contract renewal talks, Atlético is open to a sale this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer at the end of next season. While the decision has raised some surprise in a World Cup year, the club respects the move, acknowledging his important, albeit inconsistent, contributions.
Should De Paul’s exit be confirmed, Atlético intends to sign a midfielder with a similar profile. As previously reported by ESPN, Javi Guerra, whom the club approached last summer, is one of the options. Richard Ríos is also admired, though his high price tag makes a deal challenging. According to sources, sporting director Carlos Bucero is considering several other candidates.
