Frequent collaborators Aubrey Plaza and Dan Murphy are developing “Kevin,” a new animated series for Prime Video centered on a cat caught in the middle of his owners’ breakup. The series will feature a star-studded cast including Plaza, Jason Schwartzman, Whoopi Goldberg, and John Waters.
The story follows Kevin (voiced by Schwartzman), a pampered tuxedo cat who, after his human parents Dana (Plaza) and her boyfriend separate, decides to strike out on his own. He moves into a local pet rescue in Queens, New York, called Furrever Friends, eager to embrace the single life but soon discovers he was sheltered from the realities of the world in his former fourth-floor apartment.
Plaza, who also serves as a co-creator and executive producer, described the show as having a “classic” feel. “It almost has this ‘Golden Girls’ kind of vibe, where you get this group of cats that all live together,” she said, adding that the series combines a “cozy” atmosphere with a “New York, indie-like” sensibility. She believes its unique tone will set it apart from more “fast and crazy” contemporary animation.
The ensemble cast includes Whoopi Goldberg as Cupcake, an unpredictable hairless cat, and director John Waters as Armando, a grumpy Persian who has sworn off humans. “The characters are just so funny,” Plaza noted. “Whoopi Goldberg playing Cupcake… is iconic.” In addition to voicing the lead, Schwartzman also performs the show’s theme song.
Co-creator and executive producer Dan Murphy revealed that he and Plaza have been developing the project for years, including through the pandemic. He emphasized the show’s authenticity, noting that the writing team drew from their own experiences living in Queens in the early 2000s. “We got our dream cast of people that we have always looked up to,” Murphy said. “We were just so amazed that we were able to get these icon-type people.”
“Kevin” does not yet have an official release date.
