Australian CHOICE names the best and worst laundry detergents of 2021

Consumer experts from CHOICE have named the best laundry detergents on the market of 2021 – and the products that performed worse than plain water.

The Australian experts trialled 130 products – liquid and powder – for both top and front loaders to find which removes stains like sweat, oil, tomato, makeup, chocolate ice cream and starches from clothes efficiently. 

Of the brands tested, Omo Laundry Detergent Triple Capsules Front ($22) took the lead as the most effective detergent for front loaders with a creditable score of 85 per cent.

2. Coles Ion Laundry Liquid Concentrate Colours Front ($9): 84%

3. Coles Ion Laundry Liquid Concentrate Original Front ($9): 84%

4. Coles Ion Laundry Capsules Original Front ($24): 82%

5. Dynamo Professional 7 Actions In 1 Wash Front ($20): 82%

6. Dynamo Professional Oxi Plus Front ($20): 82% 

7. Omo Laundry Detergent Ultimate Front ($22): 82%

8. Dynamo Professional Deep Clean Odour Eliminating Front ($20): 81%

9. Aldi Trimat Advanced Concentrate Laundry Liquid Front ($7.99): 80%

10. Omo Laundry Detergent Active Front ($22): 80%

11. Omo Laundry Detergent Ultimate Front ($22): 80%

12. Omo Laundry Detergent Ultimate Sensitive Front ($22): 80%

In a big win for budget buys, Coles dominated the next three spots with its Ion laundry front loading range. 

The supermarket’s Original ($9) and Colours ($9) tied second after earning 84 per cent. The duo cost just 27 to 28 cents a wash, compared with Omo’s 73 cents.

In fourth place, Coles’ Capsules Original ($24) received 82 per cent.

Dynamo Professional 7 Actions In 1 Wash Front ($20), Dynamo Professional Oxi Plus Front ($20) and Omo Laundry Detergent Ultimate Front ($22) all scored 82 per cent.

Dynamo Professional Deep Clean Odour Eliminating Front ($20) earned 81 per cent.

Omo Laundry Detergent Expert Odour Eliminator Top ($22): 50%

Surf Plus Stain Attacker Top ($8): 49% 

Fab Essential Oils Malaysian Orchid & Sandalwood Top ($6): 48% 

Cold Power Pure Clean Sensitive Top ($17.50): 47%

Tru Earth Eco-Strips Detergent Fresh Linen Top ($19.95): 43%

As one of the cheapest brands on the market, Aldi Trimat Advanced Concentrate Laundry Liquid Front ($7.99) scored 80 per cent, alongside Omo’s Active Front ($22),  Ultimate Front ($22) and Sensitive Front ($22). 

Omo Laundry Detergent Triple Capsules Front ($22), Coles Ion Laundry Liquid Concentrate Original ($9) and Dynamo Professional 7 Actions in 1 Wash Liquid ($20) were some of the top performers for front loaders. 

While Aldi Trimat Advanced Concentrate Powder ($5.69), Omo Ultimate Powder ($22) and Coles Lemon Fresh Hot and Cold Wash Powder ($3.70) were some of the products that dominated the top loader detergent category. 

Alarmingly, the experts found washing clothing with plain water in a front loader scored 51 per cent, performing better than 29 products – including Cold Power Pure Clean Sensitive Top ($17.50) and Earth Choice Ultra Concentrate Top ($6).

The ‘worst’ detergents for top loaders included Surf Tropical Tiger Lily Liquid ($8), Fab Intense Fresh Liquid ($6), Biozet Attack 3DCleanAction ($19.99), Omo Laundry Detergent Sensitive ($22) and Bosistos Sensitive Liquid ($12).

For front loaders, the experts urged shoppers to steer clear of Woolworths Essentials Powder ($3.69), Aldi Laundrite Powder ($3.69), Coles Lemon Fresh Hot & Cold Liquid ($1.50) and Tru Earth Eco-Strips Fresh Linen ($19.95).
