Australian Open is plunged into chaos as star Greek player tests positive to Covid after arriving in Melbourne from South Africa
The Australian Open has been plunged into further chaos after a Greek tennis star revealed he has tested positive to coronavirus.
Michail Pervolarakis returned a positive swab on Tuesday and is now is Spain.
But the 24-year-old only flew out of Melbourne around February 9 after competing in the ATP Cup.
He is is likely to be considered a close contact of Australia’s John Millman and Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta who he played singles matches against at Melbourne Park.
The pair are now both playing in the Australian Open and the shocking news could be a major disruption to the tournament.
Tennis Australia confirmed to the Herald Sun that tested negative before leaving the country.
Pervolarakis took to social media to break the news.
‘After a 24-plus hour travel day from Australia to South Africa I’ve been diagnosed positive to COVID-19,’ he posted on Instagram.
‘I am completely asymptomatic at the moment and will have to quarantine in an isolation facility in Potchefstroom.
‘I am not a person that complains, but I feel that I need to express my disappointment with the conditions we are in.’
