Singles have revealed their top dating deal breakers in a partner – and why eating and drinking habits can make or break a relationship.

Relationship coach Louanne Ward, from Perth in Western Australia, posed the question in her Facebook group She Said He Said, looking to see whether or not singles would date a vegan or a non-drinker.

‘Food is such a big part of our lives, is it an area we need compatibility in? How important is it to share similar eating and drinking habits?’ she asked.

While dozens of people admitted someone’s eating and drinking habits don’t bother them, others said sharing a common passion for food was one of the top qualities for a potential partner.

‘I would date a non drinker as there’s nothing worse than a boozer. But a vegan? Nope! My Italian background of food loving would make it impossible,’ a woman wrote.

One man said he’ll never be in a relationship with a vegan again after he previously dated a woman with a strict plant-based diet.

‘I dated a vegan, never again. It was way too hard,’ he explained.

‘She even asked the chef to prove that he was using separate cooking utensils to prepare her meal and then brought over a type of vegan wine… Still seeking therapy.’

A second man said dating a vegan would be ‘difficult’ but he’s willing to compromise as long as they are not an ‘activist or bag me out for being a meat eater’.

He joked: ‘Non drinker would be my designated driver.’

Another man said he couldn’t imagine his life with a vegan because he enjoys meat-based foods and spending time in the kitchen cooking meals.

‘No to vegan. I think there’s a level of intimacy I would miss not being able to mutually share what we love,’ he said.

What are realistic dating deal-breakers?

1. Similar long term goals, for example the desire to have children.

2. Height ratio, for example if you are a tall woman wanting a man as tall or taller. Same goes for weight, if you are physically fit and in good shape it’s realistic to want the same.

3. In certain age groups, for example under 35, it’s realistic to want someone who doesn’t have children if you don’t currently have them.

4. Living somewhere geographically doable – this is not to be confused with ruling out people who live 25 minutes away!

5. Having some things in common is important. They don’t have to love everything you do but if, for example, you have a boat and spend your summer on the ocean and your partner hates the water, the relationship is unlikely to last.

6. If they dislike or are allergic to your dog or cat – they live with you and are part of your life.

One woman said her eating and drinking habits are too important in her life.

‘Drinking and liking most foods for me is important as I love exotic foods and eat anything and everything. I couldn’t date a picky eater,’ she explained.

Meanwhile, other people said they didn’t have any issues with non-drinkers or vegans as long as there’s a chemistry between them.

‘I’ve dated people who didn’t share my love of spicy food. I’ve also dated non-drinkers. If I found the love of my life, I don’t mind cooking separately for her and even giving up alcohol the rest of my life. I’d rather be drunk with love,’ one said.

Another wrote: ‘I would like to say what you put in your body is your choice and you will reap the rewards be it good or bad. For me I would like to be with someone who doesn’t over indulge in drink or eating. If he is a vegan, more meat and eggs for me.’

And one added: ‘As for a vegan, who cares as long as they don’t judge me I don’t judge them.’

Some pointed out if a a date was a non-drinker, it really depended on why they chose this lifestyle.

‘It depends why they are a non drinker… if they were a raging alcoholic six months ago then no. If it’s because they are allergic to alcohol and have a face like a tomato, then yes,’ one woman wrote.
