Montgomery police are investigating a mass casualty incident that occurred in the city’s downtown district early Sunday morning.
The incident took place around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Bibb and Commerce streets. Emergency personnel responded to the scene, and authorities have cordoned off the area, diverting traffic. In a statement, Montgomery Police Department Lt. Tina McGriff advised the public to avoid the location.
As of early Sunday, officials had not confirmed the number of casualties, the specific nature of the event, or whether there was an ongoing threat to public safety.
The incident unfolded on a busy night in the city’s tourist district, just hours after a football game between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College. The city had also debuted a Ferris wheel and other downtown attractions to coincide with the game.
