Baja California, with the highest cost of crime per company

Baja California, Mexico City and Guanajuato were the entities in the country that suffered the most from the economic losses derived from crime by company, as well as the expenses incurred in protection measures.

The trend is that the states of the northern border of the national territory present the highest costs for extortion; the robbery or assault of merchandise, money, supplies or goods; acts of corruption; fraud, and other crimes.

Baja California registered the highest average cost of crime at the national level, of 95,631 pesos per economic unit during 2021.

According to the National Survey of Victimization of Companies (ENVE), of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), in general, the total cost as a result of insecurity and crime in the northern entity amounted to 5,173.5 million pesos in the year of analysis; by global amount, it was placed in seventh place in the country.

Last year, 3,976 economic units were victims of crime for every 10,000 units, an increase of 3.1% compared to 2019 when there were 2,983 units.

In Baja California, the two most frequent crimes in 2021 were extortion and theft or assault of merchandise, money, supplies or goods.

Also in this entity, the ENVE 2022 reports that 74.2% of the economic units perceived public insecurity, an increase of 8.8 percentage points in relation to the ENVE 2020.

Regarding the average cost, after Baja California, the second place is occupied by Mexico City with a cost of crime of 95,128 pesos per company; the third place is from Guanajuato with 90,088 pesos.

Chihuahua follows with 67,324 pesos, Sonora with 67,101 pesos, Quintana Roo with 65,929 pesos, Querétaro with 64,593 pesos, Nuevo León with 59,807 pesos, State of Mexico with 58,012 pesos and San Luis Potosí with 57,180 pesos.

Together, these 10 entities recorded an average cost higher than the national one, which was 56,936 pesos of economic loss per economic unit in the country.

The remaining 22 entities reported an average cost below the national; the list continues with Tamaulipas, Jalisco and Veracruz.

With a cost below 50,000 pesos, followed by Sinaloa, Puebla, Colima, Morelos, Hidalgo, Tabasco, Aguascalientes, Chiapas, Durango, Baja Southern California, Coahuila, Michoacan, Nayarit, Guerrero, Campeche, Yucatan, Zacatecas and Tlaxcala.

Meanwhile, the lowest amount was in Oaxaca with 22,542 pesos.

The highest costs per company are located on the northern border, where one of its characteristics is a high purchasing power due to the close trade relationship with the United States.

In 2021, at the national level, the total cost as a result of insecurity and crime in economic units amounted to 120,241.2 million pesos, which represented 0.67% of the country’s GDP.

Mexico City registered the highest total cost, of 22,366.3 million pesos, which meant 18.6% of the total.

The State of Mexico continued with a cost of 16,193.6 million pesos (13.5% of the total), Guanajuato with 10,090.0 million (8.4%) and Jalisco with 7,342.4 million (6.1 percent).

In addition to Puebla, Veracruz, Baja California, Nuevo León, Sonora, Michoacán, Querétaro and San Luis Potosí.

While with a total cost greater than 1 billion and less than 3 billion pesos, Chihuahua, Chiapas, Hidalgo, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Oaxaca, Morelos, Quintana Roo, Guerrero, Coahuila, Tabasco, Durango, Yucatan, Tlaxcala and Aguascalientes followed.

The entities with a cost of less than 1,000 million pesos were Zacatecas with 841.9 million (0.7%), Colima with 731.2 million (0.6%), Nayarit with 715.2 million (0.6%), Baja California Sur with 540.9 million (0.4%) and Campeche of 450.1 million (0.4 percent).
