A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has struck the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir, a region that has experienced a series of tremors in recent months.
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 5.99 kilometers.
The earthquake was widely felt, with shaking reported in major surrounding provinces, including Istanbul, Izmir, Bursa, Aydın, and Eskişehir.
Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya released a statement addressing the incident.
“A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has occurred in Sındırgı, Balıkesir,” he said. “All teams from AFAD and our relevant institutions have immediately begun field assessments in response to the earthquake, which was also felt in surrounding provinces. I extend my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May God protect our country and our nation from disasters.”
