‘I want to have him at Barcelona’: Ronald Koeman confirms he is hoping to sign Lyon’s Memphis Depay in January after summer pursuit failed due to club’s finances taking a serious hit amid the coronavirus pandemic

- Barcelona need to sell before they can buy after a hugely tough financial year
- Memphis Depay remains committed to Lyon but was tight lipped about his future
Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has reiterated his intentions to sign Lyon’s Memphis Depay in January after their failed summer pursuit.
The former Manchester United forward looked as though he was heading to the Nou Camp before the transfer deadline, but a deal couldn’t be struck after Barcelona’s finances had taken a serious hit this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Whilst Depay has spoken of his pride to captain the French side and his desire to fire them back into the Champions League, his former national team boss still wants to sign the Dutchman before his contract expires next summer.
Lyon star Memphis Depay was a serious target for Barcelona in the summer transfer window
Koeman was asked by AD if he would move for him in the January transfer window, and he replied: ‘It’s a possibility. I will try because I want to have him at Barcelona, but I can’t know what the financial situation of the club will be then. We’ll have to wait.’
Barca’s inability to move on players in the summer was a major hurdle that prevented the proposed transfer from coming to fruition, as the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Phillippe Coutinho remained at the Nou Camp.
Antoine Griezmann has also been linked with a move away after he publicly complained about Koeman playing him out of position on the right of Barcelona’s attack.

Barcelona recently released a grim set of financial figures, showing a loss of £88million amid the coronavirus crisis, which plagued their summer transfer hopes.
‘Everything was ready but due to rules we knew we had to sell a player first,’ Koeman confirmed. ‘In the end, that didn’t happen. We wanted Memphis because he’s a great player and because he’s got qualities that I think we lack, including an ability to play with depth in his game.’
However, Depay commented on Friday: ‘I’m very happy to be at Lyon. I’m proud to be a Lyon player and the captain. Things have been misunderstood. What’s said in the media is not always true. It’s true that some clubs were interested in me and came forward, but in the end no deal was done.’

When asked of the possibility of a move in January, he replied: ‘That’s in four months, we’ll see. My thoughts are with Lyon.’
Barcelona have had a good start to the La Liga season and have taken seven points from their opening three fixtures, they travel to Getafe on Saturday and host Ferencvaros in their opening Champions League group game three days later.
Barca will then host Real Madrid in the first Clasico of the season next Saturday.
