Barcelona are still trying to sign a left winger this summer after failing to secure Athletic Bilbao’s Neco Williams and missing out on Liverpool’s Luis Diaz.
Several sources in Spain said that Barcelona had been in contact with Jorge Mendes, the agent of Portuguese striker Rafael Leao, regarding convincing him to join the Catalan club.
Barcelona hopes to exploit its strong relationship with the Portuguese to find a solution to sign the player.
“El Chiringuito” indicated that the Portuguese will be a key factor in any negotiations, and that a deal worth 90 million euros could be agreed upon, and that the presence of Mendes opens the door for Barcelona to sign him and that Leao is open to this step.”
However, this news does not match the information coming from Italy, where it was said that Milan will only accept paying Leao’s release clause of 175 million euros.
Why Liao?
Media sources spoke about the desire of the sporting director Deco to move, and they explained that the reason behind their interest in Leao (25 years old) is not strictly due to the needs of the team.
As was the case with Nico Williams, president Joan Laporta is keen to sign a star this summer to excite the fans and ensure they turn out in large numbers at Montjuïc and then Camp Nou.
Given Leao’s name is so well known, Barcelona officials see his signing as a huge plus for the club and a response to Real Madrid’s signing of Kylian Mbappe.
Leao joined Milan in the summer of 2019 from Lille for €49.5 million, and his current contract runs until 2028.
The Portuguese winger participated in 211 matches with the Rossoneri in various competitions, during which he scored 58 goals and provided 50 assists.
