- Bath have been left short of depth at No 10 after Freddie Burns’ departure
- Flanker Zach Mercer is attracting interest from France as his contract runs out
Bath have been sounded out about the prospect of signing Harlequins fly-half Marcus Smith to solve their shortage of No 10s.
The West Country club have not replaced Freddie Burns for the 2020-21 season.
Smith agreed a cut-price contract with Harlequins in the summer, but most players have exit clauses in their terms.

Bath director of rugby Stuart Hooper said: ‘Marcus Smith is an outstanding player but he is under contract with another club so, while we are often linked with quality players, I am keen to make it clear that our focus remains on our squad heading into the 20-21 season.’
Meanwhile, Bath and England flanker Zach Mercer, out of contract next summer, is attracting interest from Montpellier.
‘We are watching many players and Zach is one of them,’ said the French club’s director of rugby Philippe Saint-Andre.
