AND, WITH NO LIFEGUARDS ON HAND, COMMUNITY ACTIVISTS GOT SYBU SPREADING THE RD AWOBOUT SAFETY. THE BEACH AMBASSADORS TOLD US — REPORTED ZERO DROWNINGS WERE REPORTED AT BRADFORD BEACH THI SSUMMER. Beach ambassadors plan to return next summer
After an increase in drownings in 2020, local organizations created special patrols to educate beachgoers about Lake Michigan’s hazards.”Well, today, is the last day of summer, so I thought we would have some fun,” Olivia Olson said.Bradford Beach in Milwaukee was upbeat with people enjoying nearly perfect weather on Labor Day.Alongside beachgoers were new beach ambassadors, using the unofficial last day of summer to promote lakeshore safety.”As a beach ambassador, our primary job is to educate the public, welcome them to beach, give them beach safety tips,” Jumana Tanner said. “In general, people think the lake is pretty safe, and for the most part, it is, but when we have really dangerous weather conditions it can act like an ocean sometimes and sometimes even more dangerous.”Last summer, four drownings led to changes along Milwaukee’s lakefront.This year the county closed McKinley Beach after discovering the layout of the beach-induced deadly rip currents.With no lifeguards on hand, community activists got busy spreading the word about safety.The beach ambassadors told WISN 12 News there were zero drownings were reported at Bradford Beach this summer. They consider this a success and hope to expand the program to other beaches.”The idea of having the Beach Ambassador program at multiple different beaches, I think it would it be definitely helpful for people.
