Beer production in Mexico grew 4.8% between January and August

Beer production in Mexico reports a growth of 4.8% in the January and August period, compared to the same period in 2021, with 94.5 million hectoliters, reported Karla Siqueiros, general director of Cerveceros de México.

In a report on the behavior of agribusiness, he commented that it has become an important engine of the Mexican economy by contributing 1.5% of the country’s GDP. “It has a highly integrated value chain, 73% of the inputs required for beer production are national purchases, which gives it a high level of Mexican content. It impacts 168 productive activities in the three economic sectors, generates 700,000 jobs and more than 5,000 farmers dedicated to the cultivation of malting barley”.

Data from Cerveceros por México reveal that beer production in the country has developed significantly in recent years, creating highly competitive states in the production of malting barley.

The main producing states are: Guanajuato with 235,813 tons; Hidalgo with, 223,595; Tlaxcala with, 124,329 tons; Puebla with 100,290 tons, and the State of Mexico with 91,398 tons. For this reason, the director of Cerveceros por México stated that “the brewing industry is a strategic ally for Mexico within a competitive global economic context.”

According to Inegi figures, the 94.5 million hectoliters of beer produced in the first eight months of the year represent a growth of 11.9% compared to the 84.4 million hectoliters registered in the same period of 2019 (pre-pandemic level).

Responsible use of water

The president of Cerveceros de México also referred to the use of water that must be adequate, but at the same time permanently seek sustainable use.

“For a decade, the ‘Agribusiness Water Management Program’ has been developed and implemented, which has three main axes: responsible use of water; wastewater treatment and reuse.

He explained that the most efficient beer production plants in terms of water in the world are found in Mexico, as they use only 2.5 liters of water per liter of beer produced; the international average is between 4 and 6 litres.
