The Myanmar army seized power in a coup against the government of Aung San Suu Kyi, which was arrested along with other senior officials in the raids during the early hours of Monday morning, and announced the appointment of the army chief, Min Aung Helangen, as interim president.
Aung San Suu Kyi called on the people to reject and protest the military coup.
The coup sparked criticism and condemnation in a number of countries and international organizations, while other countries confined themselves to calling for the parties in Myanmar to show restraint and resolve differences by peaceful means.
