Algeria national team coach Djamel Belmadi is preparing to prove himself in the 34th edition of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Ivory Coast during the period from January 13 to February 11.
The Desert Warriors are participating in the African Cup of Nations for the twentieth time, and are playing in Group Four, which also includes the teams of Burkina Faso, Angola, and Mauritania.
Belmadi (47 years old) took over the technical leadership of the Algerian national team in the summer of 2019, and after an unpromising march in the qualifying rounds for the Cup of Nations after two draws with Gambia and a loss to Benin, he surprised everyone and won the title of the 2019 edition, which was hosted by Egypt, giving his country the second title after wonderful performances during which it defeated Sahel. Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Senegal twice in the first round and the final.
The Algerian coach rose to the top quickly, but fell from it horribly, as the team bid farewell to the campaign to defend the title in the first round in the Cameroon edition in 2022, after finishing bottom of Group E with a single point after a draw with Sierra Leone and two losses to Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast.
The biggest shock for Djamel Belmadi was not qualifying for the last World Cup Qatar 2022 in a dramatic scenario after winning the final round over Cameroon with a goal in Yaounde, then losing in the return leg at Mustafa Chaker Stadium in Blida 1-2 in the final seconds.
Djamel Belmadi is trying to overcome the shocks of the 2022 African Cup of Nations and not qualify for the 2022 World Cup in the next edition of the African Cup of Nations, amid intense media and public pressure, despite the balanced record in terms of results, achieving 39 victories, compared to 15 draws, and 5 defeats in 59 matches.
Before his career with the Algerian national team, Jamal Belmadi spent his entire coaching career with Qatari football, where he led the Al-Duhail team in two terms, the first between 2010 and 2012 and the second between 2015 and 2018. He also worked as technical director for the Qatar Olympic and senior teams.
Belmadi was known for his success and reaching podiums in all his previous experiences, as he won the league title with Al-Duhail 4 times, the Emir of Qatar Cup twice, and the Qatar Cup once.

With the Qatar Olympic team, he won the West Asian Championship in 2014 after defeating Jordan in the final match, and presented a strong march during which the team was not defeated, and the players scored 10 goals against one goal against Al-Annabi.
With the first Qatari team, he won the “Gulf 22” Championship in 2014 after defeating the Saudi team, the organizer of the tournament, in the final match, but he disappointed in the 2015 Asian Nations Cup by exiting in the first round after 3 consecutive defeats against the Emirates, Bahrain, and Iran.
In his career as a player, Balmadi went through prestigious clubs throughout his career – which began in 1995, such as Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Marcella in France, Celta Vigo in Spain, and Manchester City and Southampton in England, in addition to Arab experiences with Al-Gharafa and Al-Kharaitiyat clubs in Qatar.
Belmadi played 20 international matches for the Algerian national team, during which he scored 5 goals during the period between 2000 and 2004, and won the Best Algerian Player award twice, in 2000 and 2001.
