(CNN) — Internet memory can be both long and short when it comes to celebrities.
A recent clip of Ben Affleck speaking in Spanish from his new movie “Air” with Cadena SER, a radio station in Spain, is surprising those who didn’t know that the actor can converse fluently in the language.
The radio network posted a portion of the interview on TikTok, in which Affleck explains part of his thought process behind the film in rather impressive Spanish, even joking with ease in the language.
This led to some jokes in the comments, for example from one person who wrote: “The change from Ben to Benito”.
But it is not the first time that Affleck has shown that he is bilingual.
The actor, screenwriter and director has used Spanish in press interviews on red carpets and with paparazzi. And although his wife Jennifer Lopez is of Puerto Rican descent, Affleck learned the language in his youth.
The actor and director told Kelly Clarkson on his daytime talk show that, when he was 13 years old, he spent a year in Mexico filming a television show, where he learned the language.
Affleck also shared that his daughter Violet with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner was studying Spanish in school and had been doing so well that he had encouraged her to improve her language skills so she wouldn’t surpass him. “I don’t care that I can’t do your math homework, but you’re not going to be better than me in Spanish,” he joked.
