Benzema did not score in the final, as the winning goal was signed by young Brazilian Vinicius Junior, but the Frenchman is the top scorer in the continental competition this season with 15 goals, including 10 in the playoffs.
He told the French channel “Canal Plus” after the match, in response to a question if he was considering winning the Golden Ball: “Of course. Now I will join the national team, but I think that at the club level I can do no better than that. We will see what happens. Anyway, I’m proud of what I’ve achieved.”
Benzema, 34, will join the French national team squad for a series of matches in the European Nations League next June, after he finished the season with 44 goals with Real Madrid in all competitions, including 27 in the league that contributed to the team crowning the Spanish champion.
Benzema scored a hat-trick against Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea in the eight-finals and quarter-finals respectively, in addition to a return goal against the “Blues” and 3 goals in two matches against Manchester City in the semi-finals.
He said, referring to the wonderful “remontada” that Real achieved several times on his way to the final and became the first team to win the title despite losing 3 matches in the playoffs: “There is no luck, you can be lucky once, but not every time.
