Real Madrid enters the match at the top of the Spanish league standings, before the start of the round, with 17 points, one point behind Real Sociedad, the runner-up, while Espanyol, returning to La Liga this season, is in the fourteenth place with 6 points.
Real Madrid, led by its Italian coach, relies on the brilliant attacking duo this season, the French Karim Benzema, who is the top scorer in the competition with 8 goals, and his Brazilian runner-up, Vinicius Junior, who scored 5 goals, and they are the two most contributed to scoring goals in all five major leagues.
Missing from the list are Isco, Marco Asensio, Mariano Diaz and Ferland Mendy, along with Dani Carvajal and Marcelo.
