The right mattress plays a big role in enjoying a peaceful and comfortable sleep. There are two types of mattresses available in the market: the mattress with a spring core (springs), and the other made of foam (foam).
According to the Sleep Foundation website, spring mattresses are a type that uses a layer of metal springs as the primary support, and often contains thin layers of foam. As for foam mattresses, they, in turn, consist of several layers of completely foam materials, such as memory foam or polyurethane.
Advantages of foam mattresses
- Excellent adaptation: Foam naturally molds to your body's shape, which helps distribute weight evenly.
- Good motion isolation: Foam mattresses effectively absorb movement, reducing the impact of movement on the person sharing the bed.
- Comfort in pressure areas: Foam provides excellent comfort in areas such as the shoulders and hips, especially for side sleepers.
- Prices: Foam mattresses are available at varying prices from low to luxury.
Disadvantages of foam mattresses
- Smell: New mattresses sometimes release a chemical odor known as “off-gassing.”
- Heat retention: Some types of foam can retain heat, making them uncomfortable.
Advantages of spring mattresses
- Excellent ventilation: Provides better airflow, which helps keep the bed cool.
- Strong support: Suitable for heavier people who need a firmer mattress.
- Reasonable cost: They are generally available at lower prices than luxury foam mattresses.
Disadvantages of spring mattresses
- Transmission: It can transmit movement, which can cause discomfort if your bed partner moves a lot.
- Possibility of making noise: It may make a buzzing sound over time.
As for the Goods and Products Testing Authority in Germany, it confirmed that back comfort does not play a major role in the comparison between the two types, explaining that a mattress made of foam is suitable for people who feel cold easily. Because it provides good insulation.
A spring-core mattress is usually heavier and is well ventilated, making it suitable for people who sweat a lot.
The authority noted that the firmness or softness of a mattress depends on personal preferences, even for those who suffer from lower back pain.
For its part, the Sleep Foundation website said that there is no ideal option that suits everyone, as it depends on individual sleep preferences. Foam mattresses are ideal for people looking to isolate motion and provide relief at pressure points, while spring mattresses are better suited for those who need stronger support and better airflow to prevent heat retention.
If you are a south sleeper or feel hot while sleeping, foam mattresses may suit you better, while spring mattresses are your ideal choice if you prefer a firmer feel and need good air flow.
