Nusa Dua, Indonesia. During their first meeting in person, the presidents of the United States, Joe Biden, and China, Xi Jinping, began talks on Taiwan, North Korea and the Russian war, with the aim of preventing the tense relations between the two countries from becoming in a new Cold War.
Amid simmering differences over human rights, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and support for domestic industry, in the nearly three-hour meeting the two leaders promised more frequent communications.
“We are going to compete vigorously. But I don’t look for conflicts,” Biden told reporters after the conversation with Xi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia.
Xi called Taiwan the “first red line” not to be crossed in US-China relations, Chinese state media said.
Biden reiterated that the longstanding “One China” policy has not changed. And he added: “I don’t think there is any imminent attempt by China to invade Taiwan.”
The leaders also discussed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and agreed that the use or even threat of nuclear weapons is “totally unacceptable.”
On North Korea, Biden said it was hard to know if China had any influence on weapons tests.
