US President Joe Biden congratulated Greece on the 200th anniversary of the start of the Greek revolution that led to the independence of the country, saying that “like the American Revolution inspired the Greek revolution.”
“I am pleased to congratulate the Greek people on the occasion of the 200th historic anniversary of their struggle for independence,” Biden said in his congratulatory telegram to the President of Greece, Caterina Saklaropoulou.
He added, “The Greek revolutionaries in 1821 were inspired by the example and actions of the American Revolution, just as the democracy of Athens inspired the American revolutionaries and the fathers of our nation. For more than 200 years, Greeks and Americans have cooperated closely with each other, respecting and protecting the principles of democracy that inspired and protected our revolution.”
Biden described Greece as one of the most important allies of the United States in NATO and its friend, “which guarantees stability and actively helps in peace and prosperity in the eastern Mediterranean, Black Sea and western Balkans regions.”
This year, Greece celebrates the anniversary of the war of independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1821-1829, which led to the establishment of an independent Greek state. It is scheduled to hold a military parade in Athens on March 25.
Greece has invited representatives of the countries that contributed to the independence of Greece, especially Russia, France and Britain.
Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin is scheduled to represent Russia at the official ceremony.
