The President of the United States, Joe Biden, addressed the nation on Tuesday night and expressed his condolences for the massacre that occurred this morning at an elementary school in Uvalde County, Texas.
“I was hoping that when I became president I wouldn’t have to do this,” President Biden said.
At least 21 people died, including 18 minors, at the Robb Elementary School, authorities said. The shooter was killed by police.
“These kinds of mass shootings rarely happen in other parts of the world.
Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep letting this happen? Where in God’s name is our character to have the strength to face it? It’s time to turn this pain into action,” the president said.
Biden referred to the pain of the families of the victims. “It’s never the same again,” he said. “Tonight our prayers are for those parents who are lying down trying to determine if they are going to be able to go back to sleep, what to say to their children, what is going to happen tomorrow.”
The president questioned the policy of the use of weapons in the United States: When are we going to confront the lobbyists of the arms industry? “I’m sick of this, we have to act,” he said.
“God bless the innocent lives that we lost on this sad day and the Lord be with those who feel their spirit fragmented because they are going to need a lot of help and our prayers,” Biden concluded.
The president was informed of the shooting while returning on Air Force One from a trip to South Korea and Japan.
Before leaving for Asia last week, Biden met with the families of the victims of a shooting that left 10 black people dead at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York.
