Biden will toughen immigration policy

Washington. A new era is opening in terms of migration for the United States. President Joe Biden promised this Thursday a new “safe and humane” immigration strategy.

“Do not come to the border” without having first initiated a legal process, Biden asked yesterday, to the migrants who arrive in the country in record numbers.

And it is that “the United States will allow the entry of up to 30,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela each month, but will tighten the restrictions on the border with Mexico, which President Biden himself will visit this Sunday.

These measures will expand and expedite legal pathways for orderly migration and have new consequences for those who do not use those legal pathways,” the White House said in a statement.

The quota of migrants will be limited to those who have a US sponsor and those who try to enter illegally will be expelled under the health regulation known as “Title 42” and with the intervention of the police, in coordination with Mexico.

Its objective is to try to alleviate the pressure on the border with Mexico, where a record number of migrants and asylum seekers arrive in large waves to flee the misery and violence of their respective countries.

For his part, the United States Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar commented that the United States government will provide some 23 million dollars in additional aid to its partners in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, to help migrants with emergencies and promote their integration.

Central theme of the summit

The immigration issue will be the key topic of his meetings next week with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in Mexico in the framework of the North American Leaders Summit.

“We have a tight schedule” for this leaders’ summit that will be held Monday and Tuesday and will also be attended by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Biden said.
