The president of United States, Joe Bidenwill visit Mexico in January, the White House announced on Tuesday, which is trying to strengthen ties with the neighboring country, particularly in the context of the migration crisis.
Biden will attend the North American Leaders Summit on January 9 and 10.
There he will meet with the president. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeausaid John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, in dialogue with reporters.
Kriby indicated that the three will discuss climate, economic competitiveness and migration, among other topics.
Trudeau confirmed this Tuesday his attendance at the meeting, popularly known as the “Summit of the Three Amigos”.
In June, AMLO, as he often refers to the Mexican president, did not attend the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles on the grounds that Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua had not been invited.
Since commercial interests, immigration and the fight against drug trafficking mark the bilateral relationship, Biden and AMLO met in person in Washington in July and had a telephone interview in October.
“We intend to build on the progress of the last exchange with concrete initiatives,” Kirby said.
Both Washington and the Mexican government are seeking a close partnership, particularly on security and migration, as the Biden administration struggles to implement a lasting strategy to manage the relentless arrival of migrants at its 2,000-mile border with Mexico.
At the moment, the White House’s immigration policy is based mainly on a restriction on entry into the country for health reasons, implemented by Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trumpin March 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic was sweeping the United States.
This measure, known as Title 42was due to expire tomorrow Wednesday, but the Supreme Court of the United States decided that it will be maintained.
Kirby said the United States was “working right now” with Mexico to “address the disinformation being spread by smugglers” to recruit people to cross the US border.
Biden “believes that one of the best ways to respond to border pressure is to work internationally with our partners in Latin America to reduce and divert migrant arrivals, particularly from Central America,” Kriby stressed.
In a statement, Trudeau’s office said the three leaders “will continue to work together to help grow our economies for the benefit of all and create good middle-class jobs across the continent.”
The Canadian statement specified that they will discuss collaboration in the supply chain for the manufacture of electric vehicles, an issue that has been under discussion in Washington’s trade talks with the European Union, which has characterized US policies as protectionist.
