Former White House chief of staff Ron Klain is cooperating with a House Oversight Committee investigation into President Joe Biden’s mental fitness, according to lawmakers present at his closed-door testimony on Thursday.
Klain, who served as chief of staff for the first two years of Biden’s term, was interviewed by committee staff as part of an inquiry led by Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.). The investigation seeks to determine whether administration officials concealed any signs of cognitive decline in the president.
Following the initial round of questioning, members of both parties characterized Klain as credible and cooperative. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) told reporters that Klain “answered every single question” and praised his “candor and the comprehensive way he had answered.”
Similarly, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) described Klain’s testimony as accurate and forthright. “He is not trying to avoid answering the questions,” Biggs said. “He’s answering the questions carefully.”
Chairman Comer echoed these sentiments during a break, calling the transcribed interview “very good” and noting that Klain was being “fairly responsive.” While declining to share specifics from the testimony, Comer reiterated the basis for the probe, stating, “Evidence emerges on a daily basis that would suggest Joe Biden wasn’t mentally fit to be President of the United States.”
The interview was expected to continue late into the afternoon, following a standard format where committee staff from both parties alternate questioning in hourly blocks.
