During an NBA Cup matchup between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers, a controversial foul call involving Joel Embiid drew sharp criticism from The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, who declared the center gets the most “ludicrous” calls in the league.
The incident occurred late in the game when Embiid was fouled on a three-point attempt, awarding the former MVP three free throws. Although officials reviewed the play for a potential hostile act, the call was upheld. Simmons remained critical, posting on social media: “Nobody gets more ludicrous calls than Embiid – literally no one. He’s the only guy who can kick his legs out on a three, kick someone in the nuts and then shoot 3 free throws. It’s hilarious. Never change NBA.”
The complaint taps into a long-standing discussion surrounding Embiid’s ability to draw fouls. He has consistently ranked among the league’s leaders in free throw attempts, leading the NBA in that category during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. In the 2022-23 season, he finished second only to Giannis Antetokounmpo. Last season, a knee injury limited him to 39 regular-season games, but he remained among the league leaders in attempts per game when healthy.
In Friday’s contest, Embiid attempted a game-high seven free throws. However, the calls did not ultimately alter the outcome. Despite nearly losing a 24-point lead, the Celtics held on for a tight 109-108 victory over the 76ers. The win moves Boston to 3-3 on the season and gives them a 1-0 start in NBA Cup play.
