The Buffalo Bills announced Friday that kicker Tyler Bass has been placed on injured reserve due to a left hip and groin injury. He will miss a minimum of four games, starting with the Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
Veteran kicker Matt Prater is expected to take his place. Prater, who was signed to the team’s practice squad earlier this week, must be elevated to the active roster by 4 p.m. Saturday to be eligible to play.
Prater brings nearly 20 years of NFL experience, holding the league record for most field goals from 50 or more yards with 81. He has made 407 of 487 career field goal attempts (83.6%), with a career-long of 64 yards.
Bass was limited in Wednesday’s practice before sitting out on Thursday and Friday. Head Coach Sean McDermott noted that Bass had been dealing with soreness in the area.
