US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that there are areas in which Washington can work with Russia, despite the challenges posed by Moscow, as he put it.
Blinken added in a statement to the “Euronews” channel, whose text was published on the US State Department website on Thursday, that Russia was “a major topic in NATO discussions this week,” and that there is “a common concern about some hostilities on its part.”
After renewing the traditional US accusations against Russia of interference in elections, cyber attacks, attempted assassination of opposition Alexei Navalny, and “aggression” in eastern Ukraine, Blinken said that the new weapons systems Russia is developing are of concern to Washington and its allies.
He continued, “I believe that there is a common assessment of the challenges that Russia poses, as well as a shared commitment to stand together in addressing them.”
“We are also aware that there may be areas in which we can work together based on our common interests,” he added, referring to the extension of the Treaty on the Limitation of Strategic Offensive Weapons (START-3) and arms control.
It is noteworthy that Russia has repeatedly rejected accusations of practicing any hostile acts against other countries, including alleged interference in elections and cyber attacks, and has confirmed that it is not a party to the conflict in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.
