“Air Canada” company said that its “Boeing 737 MAX 8” airliner encountered an engine problem that forced it to divert its course during its flight from Arizona to Montreal.
The pilots had “decided to stop one of the engines,” a company spokesman said in a statement on Friday.
“The plane was then rerouted to Tucson, where it landed naturally and is still there,” he added. The incident dates back to December 22.
The Belgian aviation news site (Aviation24 dotB) said that the flight crew received a signal that the hydraulic pressure of the left-hand drive had decreased and an emergency situation had been declared before diverting the flight path.
“The modern aircraft are designed to operate with a single engine, and our crews are trained for such operations,” the company statement added.
Boeing and airlines are preparing for intense screening procedures, with the MAX aircraft resuming operation after a 20-month hiatus, but safety experts say such a defect is common and usually goes unnoticed.
The MAX was decommissioned after two accidents partly linked to defects in the cockpit program. There was no connection with the engines.
The United States last month lifted a 20-month ban on operating flights of the 737 MAX, after the US Federal Aviation Administration specified details of the software, systems and training updates that Boeing and airlines must complete before transporting passengers.
