Borrell separates the EU from the United States

Buenos Aires. The European Union (EU) applies sanctions to political officials of countries, as in the case of Nicaragua, but is careful not to punish citizens, as is the case with the United States blockade of Cuba, he said yesterday, October 27, in Buenos Aires the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell.

“We have discrepancies and in some cases so many that the EU comes to sanction some of the countries present here (in Buenos Aires),” the high representative for foreign relations said at a press conference, at the end of a summit of foreign ministers from Latin America and the EU in the Palacio San Martín.

When asked about the human rights situation in Nicaragua, he replied that “there are sanctions and sanctions. Those adopted by the EU are always aimed at political personnel who we understand are responsible for certain behaviors.”

Referring to the outcome of the summit, he said that “the reunion of 54 countries that had not seen each other in four years was important. There is consensus on the objectives of contributing to world peace, stable democracies, shared and sustainable economic progress, with respect to human rights”.

“You can’t agree on everything,” but “you have to generate employment and wealth, and distribute it,” he stressed.

Borrell said that “in the face of the shock wave of the war in Ukraine, Latin America is the most consistent and unanimous region in condemning Russia’s aggression.”

At his side, Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero reiterated “the urgent call to stop the war.”
