Boston said that the procedure was to ‘repair a tear of the radial collateral ligament of the third metacarpo-phalangeal joint on his left hand.’
Williams is expected to be sidelined 6-8 weeks by the procedure, which puts him on track to be ready for training camp, which opened on September 27 for all teams this season.
According to ESPN, Williams actually suffered the hand injury in March but played through the injury as the Celtics came one win short of the NBA Finals.
Boston clawed its way back from an 0-3 hole vs. Miami to force a Game 7 at home in the Eastern Conference Finals, but got blown out as the Heat won the decisive game 103-84.
Grant Williams shot 45 percent from three-point range this postseason with the Celtics
Williams reportedly played through his hand injury since March before undergoing surgery
Williams played a significant role for the Celtics in the regular season, averaging a career-high 25.9 minutes per game and averaging 8.1 points per contest.
In the playoffs, he saw less time on the court – just 17.7 minutes per contest – but provided valuable spacing for Boston as he shot 45 percent from three-point range.
After playing out his four-year, $11.8million rookie contract, Williams is a restricted free agent, meaning Boston has the ability to match any offer sheet the 24-year-old signs with another team.
With teammate Jaylen Brown eligible to sign a $295million ‘supermax’ extension this offseason, the Celtics could elect to let Williams walk and look for cheaper three-and-D options.
