(Trends Wide) — A 5-year-old boy in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, was shot and killed by another 13-year-old on Thanksgiving, when the teenager accidentally fired a gun while the group of children recorded a video on social media, according to police.
“On November 25 at 10:19 pm, Brooklyn Park police officers were called to a home in the 8000 block of Florida Ave. to care for a 5-year-old boy who had been shot,” police said. of Brooklyn Park (BPPD) in a Facebook post on Friday.
BPPD officers “attempted to render first aid, however, the boy died at the scene,” they say in the publication.
After a preliminary investigation, officers determined that “a 13-year-old boy in the home was handling a weapon,” the BPPD said. “Several other young people were present while trying to make a video on social media,” police said.
It is unclear what led to the incident, but at some point the 13-year-old “fired the gun and hit the 5-year-old,” the publication said.
Investigators believe the shooting was accidental, BPPD said.
“The 13-year-old was arrested and is currently in the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center,” he said Friday.
BPPD continues to investigate the deadly shooting.
