Brian Robinson Jr. Embraces Gradual Transition to 49ers Offense

Brian Robinson Jr. is expected to play a significant role in the San Francisco 49ers’ offense this season, but he first faces the challenge of mastering a new system on a tight schedule.

As the 49ers prepare for their Week 1 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, the veteran running back explained his approach to absorbing the team’s extensive playbook.

“Just taking it day by day,” Robinson told reporters. “Obviously, the playbook is pretty big and [I’m] just doing everything I can to dive right into it and learn all the information I need to know. I feel like I’m in a pretty good spot as far as learning the playbook for where we’re at to start the season.”

Robinson clarified that the primary challenge is the volume of information rather than the complexity of the scheme itself.

“Nothing has been difficult about it. It’s just about learning and retaining the information,” he said. “It’s a lot of plays in there, so obviously I don’t expect to have the playbook in full in one week, but [I’m] constantly making that progress every day to get there.”

He added that his focus is on mastering all facets of his role, including the run game, passing game, and protection assignments. “I’m trying my best to learn everything as a whole because in the end game I got to know everything,” Robinson stated.

Acquired via a trade with the Washington Commanders last month, Robinson was brought in to bolster the 49ers’ running back depth. The move could be particularly crucial as star starter Christian McCaffrey is already dealing with an injury designation heading into the regular season.

Drafted by Washington in 2022, Robinson has recorded 1,530 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in his first two NFL seasons. During the 2023 season, he averaged 4.1 yards per carry and is now positioned to contribute to a productive backfield while splitting carries with McCaffrey.
