British Secretary of State for the Middle East and North Africa James Cleverley has stated that Iran has a “chance” to reintegrate into the international community.
James Cleverley said in statements to the London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper published on Sunday that Iran has a “chance” to reintegrate into the international community, provided it complies with the terms of the nuclear deal.
Tehran’s detention of dual British citizens was also deemed “arbitrary” and unlawful.
The British Minister of State for Middle East and North Africa Affairs revealed that his country is in direct contact with the Houthis and urges them to engage in the political process and to reject violence and conflict.
He explained that he held talks with representatives of the Houthis, during which he stressed three main issues, related to the political solution and rejection of violence, the Safer tanker, and the release of a British citizen detained in Yemen.
The British minister welcomed the new US administration’s lifting of the Houthi’s designation as a terrorist organization for humanitarian reasons, and stated: “We were concerned when the previous US administration designated the Houthis a terrorist organization … I am glad that the classification was raised for humanitarian reasons … but we still strongly oppose the Houthi’s aggressive actions, as we have seen attacks. With regard to the future of trade and economic relations between Britain and the Gulf countries after Brexit, the minister stated that there is widespread interest on the part of the private and public sectors in reforms aimed at diversifying Gulf economies.
