In a briefing on the latest findings, scientists from the British government’s New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group, which is studying the new strain, said that the strain had quickly become rampant in southern Britain and could spread across the country.
“We now have high confidence that this strain has a greater ability to transmit,” said Peter Horby, professor of emerging infectious diseases at the University of Oxford and head of the group.
For his part, said Neil Ferguson, professor of infectious disease epidemiology at Imperial College London and a member of the group: “There are indications that the strain has a greater tendency to infect children.”
He added, “We did not prove any kind of reason behind this, but we can see that in the data.”
“We will need to collect more data to see how the strain will behave in the future,” he added.
