British actress Daisy Ridley has revealed she has been diagnosed with… Graves' diseasean autoimmune disease that usually affects young women, noting that she discovered she had the disease in September 2023.
The Star Wars star told Women's Health that she started feeling unwell after filming Magpie, experiencing rapid weight loss, fatigue, hand tremors and an increased heart rate. She initially thought she was suffering from exhaustion from filming, before being diagnosed with Graves' disease, an immune system disorder that causes the thyroid gland to overproduce hormones.
As for how serious her health condition is, Ridley said it is much less serious than what many people suffer from.
The 32-year-old had to give up her vegetarian diet that she had been following for several years, which made her feel better and felt the difference it made after making a comprehensive change in her diet and lifestyle in general.
“I didn’t realize how bad I felt before, and then I looked back and thought, ‘How did I do that?’” Ridley carries a piece of rose quartz, which is said to calm emotional turmoil, deepen inner peace and promote self-love.
The British actress also uses infrared saunas, cryotherapy and acupuncture as part of her wellness routine to help her deal with symptoms.
Ridley is awaiting the release of her film “Young Woman and the Sea,” in which she plays American athlete Gertrude Trudy Ederle, who was the first woman to swim across the English Channel, competed in the Olympics and became a world record holder in five swimming events. The film celebrates her on the 98th anniversary of the historic swim.
Ridley trained under the guidance of Olympian Siobhan Marie O'Connor for an hour and a half, four times a week, over the course of two and a half months. She said in her interview that she swam in the cold, harsh current, moving her body in and out of the water.
The British actress said that on the last day of filming in the Black Sea, she was asked to swim for as long as possible, noting that she could no longer do it again, and she does not remember whether she swam for minutes or a longer period.
The young actress gained great popularity through her participation in the Star Wars films, including Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, and The Inventor.
