BUMBLE: You won’t find me going to the game until there’s a Covid-19 vaccine and I’ve had it… football will remain an iFollow experience – but not on my big telly!
- I won’t be going to watch Accrington Stanley if fans are permitted next week
- It would be a risk to go to the ground before having a Covid-19 vaccine
- Football will remain an iFollow experience for the foreseeable future
I totally get the need for EFL clubs to have supporters back in grounds as soon as possible to generate income and safeguard their futures, but I won’t be going to watch my beloved Accrington until a Covid-19 vaccine is available —and I’ve had it.
Accrington chairman Andy Holt fully understands the importance of this happening, not only from a financial standpoint but also from that of a fan — as he is one — and smaller clubs like ours are so important for the local community. They bring people together.
But if 1,000 fans are permitted back in grounds next week, I will not be among the number. Why? Because I am 73, and therefore in the vulnerable group according to the medical experts.

Up to 1,000 fans could be allowed back into watch the League One club next week following the end of lockdown
Lots of folk suffer badly with colds and flu, and I have been a stage up from there with dengue fever in my time, so going to live football doesn’t enter my mind. It would be folly for me and people at my stage of life to do so.
In normal times, when not away covering England cricket tours, that is where you can find me — not in the boardroom but decked out in a club scarf and flat cap, behind the goal at the Clayton End.
My wife Diana is a season-ticket holder at York City, so if I am not cheering Stanley on, I am on the terraces with her.
Football matches will remain a strictly iFollow experience for the foreseeable future
Usually when Saturday comes I am there with bells on — a band plays pre-match, you mingle with visiting fans as there is no segregation, and get so close to the action that you have to chicane around the dugouts.
But for the foreseeable future football will remain strictly an iFollow experience for me, as it was for our League One fixture against Crewe on Tuesday.
Although not on my big telly. Try as I might throughout this most unusual of years, I am yet to master the technology.
I am now up to speed with ring-back ‘1471’ on my phone but streaming from one device to another? Well, that’s a bit beyond me.
