The head of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, said that the moves by the Sudanese army in the eastern region bordering Ethiopia, were redeployments in Sudanese lands.
In a televised speech on the 65th anniversary of Sudan’s independence, Al-Burhan said: “What is happening in the eastern region bordering our border with Ethiopia is a re-opening and redeployment of the Sudanese armed forces within its territory, and it has not and will not go beyond the international borders or attack neighboring Ethiopia.”
He continued, “We have been keen and still are keen to address the issue of violations by Ethiopian farmers and their supporters on Sudanese lands through dialogue.”
He added that joint mechanisms have been formed for this matter, and the Sudanese authorities have taken into account the eternal and private relations between the Sudanese and Ethiopian peoples, stressing that the approach of dialogue and negotiation will remain the guiding principle until everyone who is entitled to his right takes into account.
The Sudanese army chief of staff, Lieutenant General Khaled Abdeen, confirmed on Monday that the border areas with Ethiopia had not been attacked recently after the armed forces regained control of those areas, pointing to the army’s ability to protect its borders.
