An Australian businesswoman has revealed the affordable Bunnings Warehouse products she used to upcycle a wooden coffee table.

Agus, from Geelong, Victoria, shared images to the Kmart Inspired Homes Facebook group and said she used the Poly Paint Stripper, Gilly’s Carnauba Polish, sand paper and a scraper to transform the old piece of furniture.

‘If you want to renew your furniture without painting or sanding it back, this is a cheap and easy option to do so!’ Agus captioned the social media post.

The paint stripper is available in a 250mL tub for $10.43 and works as a fast-acting solvent to remove varnish easily, while the $29.99 polish is ideal to use on timber, stone, marble, concrete and chalk painted surfaces.

The second-hand coffee table was originally stained with an orange varnish that looked outdated, but the products transformed the wood to make it look light and airy.

‘I applied the paint stripper with an old brush all over the piece, working in small areas at a time,’ Agus said.

‘Removed it with a scraper and a scourer, gave it a good clean with sugar soap once the old stain was removed and hand sanded first with [sand paper] 80 grit and finish it off with 120.

‘Gave it a good clean again and applied Carnauba Polish to protect the wood.’

But while the alternative method is cheaper, Agus admitted it’s time consuming and requires more manual labour.

‘It takes a bit of patience but the result makes the effort worth it!’ she wrote online, adding gloves and a mask should be worn when upcycling furniture.
