The coordinator of the Cairo platform for the Syrian opposition, Firas al-Khalidi, stated that it had not submitted any document proposing the establishment of a joint military council between officers from the opposition forces and the Syrian army to rule the country.
Al-Khalidi said, in an interview with “Sputnik”, on Thursday, in response to a question about whether the platform had submitted a joint document with the Moscow platform to Russia calling for the establishment of a military council: “This thing is absolutely denied. First, we did not go with a joint visit like the Cairo platform and the Moscow platform. (To Russia) With our respect to the Moscow platform, there is no joint paper except within the roof of the Syrian negotiating body that includes all the components of the opposition. “
Al-Khalidi explained: “Any paper issued outside the consensus of the opposition and outside Resolution 2254, we did not present it. Secondly, we did not carry out the revolution to bring in a military council, on the contrary, we left the existing military council and tried to pressure it to amend it. We made the revolution to implement a pluralistic democratic rule that preserves citizenship.”
Regarding the information that spoke about a Russian initiative for meetings that brings together the Cairo and Moscow platforms with leaders of the ruling “Baath” party, Khalidi said: “Any talk about seeking to hold meetings with the Baath Party is untrue and unthinkable. Our meetings are public and the Geneva table is in place … No, the Russians did not present anything like this, and the Russians are not obliged to offer a secret proposal. They have Sochi and they have Geneva. “
Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper and some other Arab media have previously published reports that the Cairo and Moscow platforms of the Syrian opposition presented a document to Russia to implement Resolution 2254, which included a proposal to form a military council to govern during a transitional period, the duration of which would be agreed upon.
